Summer Reading Book Swap

Summer is fast approaching!

We are collecting used books here at Burnett

 to start a book swap.

Our goal is to get each child to get a “new” book to

read over the summer.

Please bring any of your gently used books

to school by June 1st.

Depending on the number of donations, we hope to hold our swap the last week of school!

Second Chance Breakfast Begins May 14

Second Chance Breakfast
for Burnett 4th , 5th & 6th Graders
We are trying something new beginning May 14. Due to the importance of eating breakfast and its impact on a child’s ability to pay attention and learn, we will be pilot testing a program with fourth, fifth and sixth graders where we'll offer a “grab n go” breakfast to students during the first recess of the day. This will be called a “second chance” breakfast as it will be available to those students who did not have a chance to have the school breakfast in the morning before school started. We begin with Intermediate simply due to the proximity of their playground to the MUR Kitchen. Once we have worked out all the kinks and have staff to supervise-we hope to expand to primary as well in that fall.

 Full Price:  $1.25

 Eligible for Reduced-price  $0.30

 Eligible for Free meals: $0.00

Students can only have one breakfast, either before school starts, or during the first recess, but not both.

Burnett is now a California Distinguished School

Congratulations Burnett Families! I am pleased to announce that William Burnett Elementary School has officially been named a California Distinguished School for the 2012 school year. The California Distinguished School Award identifies and honors   schools that have demonstrated educational excellence for all students and progress in narrowing the achievement gap.

In order to be invited to apply for Distinguished School honors, schools must meet a variety of eligibility criteria including designated federal and state accountability measures based on the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) and the Academic Performance Index (API) requirements.

Once we were considered eligible, the California Department of Education invited us to apply to be recognized as a Distinguished School. We passed a rigorous application process, including a written application outlining our two Signature Practices, Systematic English Language Development and Board Math. The Santa Clara County Office of Education sent a team of educators from around the valley to validate the implementation of these two practices during a site visit on March 1, 2012.

Burnett passed all levels of the application process and was officially notified of our Distinguished School status on March 29. We will be honored on May 30 at an awards ceremony where State Superintendent Tom Torlakson will present us with a 2012 Distinguished School plaque and flag.

This award demonstrates the incredible commitment of Burnett teachers, staff, students and their families in providing a world-class education to every student at Burnett.

Sincerely,

Ms. Waslif

Reading Counts @ Burnett

13, 567 Books Read! Encourage your child to attend our daily Reading Counts Club. Join us every Mon-Friday morning from 7:30 to 7:50 in our Info Lab portable 1500. Burnett students can read any book found in their classroom library, school library, or public library—fiction or non-fiction. Students can then take the corresponding computer based quiz; Scholastic Reading Counts automatically generates a quiz that meets each student's reading needs.  Every quiz is assigned a point value based on the reading level of the book, and throughout the year students will accumulates individual totals. At the end of the year we'll calculate an overall school-wide total. Burnett students have made 20,000 books their goal for 2012

Whooping Cough Vaccination

NEW VACCINATION NEEDED FOR INCOMING 7TH GRADERS All students entering 7th grades will need proof of a Tdap Booster shot before starting school on August 20, 2012. Students that have not submitted this proof will not be able to start school on August 20, 2012. There has been a dramatic increase in the number of cases of pertussis (commonly referred to as “whooping cough”) in California. Whooping cough is a vaccine-preventable disease. The best way to stop this epidemic and keep it from spreading to babies is to get as many people vaccinated as possible.
